Ice Cream Cones and Its History

by | Sep 22, 2025 | Recipes

The history of the ice cream cone involves both an invention and a popularization story: Italo Marchiony patented a device for creating edible ice cream cups in 1903 after developing the idea in 1896 to avoid using traditional dishesThe cone was then popularized at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair when Ernest Hamwi, a waffle vendor, rolled a warm waffle into a cone to serve ice cream to a neighboring vendor who had run out of dishes.

The Patented Invention
  • Italo Marchiony’s Contribution:

An Italian-American ice cream vendor from New York, Italo Marchiony, began experimenting with creating edible waffle-like cups in 1896. His goal was to find an edible, reusable container to serve his lemon ices, reducing issues with customers not returning glass dishes and breakage.

  • The Patent:

Marchiony received a patent in 1903 for a mold designed to bake ten cones at a time. This patent is often seen as the official beginning of the ice cream cone.

The St. Louis World’s Fair

    • The Legend of Ernest Hamwi:
While Marchiony patented the concept of a disposable ice cream holder, the widely shared story credits Ernest Hamwi, a Syrian immigrant selling Syrian waffles (zalabiya), with creating the first “cornucopia” at the fair.
  • The “Accidental” Invention:
The story goes that an ice cream vendor nearby ran out of serving dishes and asked Hamwi for help. Hamwi quickly rolled a warm waffle into a cone shape, creating a makeshift, edible container for the ice cream.
  • Explosion in Popularity:
This collaboration was a hit, and the innovation quickly gained popularity, becoming a common treat at fairs and resorts.

A Murky and Contentious Origin

  • Multiple Claimants:

The popularity of the ice cream cone at the 1904 World’s Fair led to multiple people claiming credit for its invention, including Hamwi and others like Charles Menches, Abe Doumar, and the Kabbaz brothers.

  • The True Origin:
The situation is complex; Marchiony had already patented a cone-making apparatus years earlier. However, it was the events at the St. Louis World’s Fair that cemented the ice cream cone’s widespread fame and recognition.
